Is there a place for small-scale production and local food systems?

The paper presents an overview of the study conducted in a border area of Portugal and Spain, in the Douro-Duero valley. This is a peripheric rural territory, characterized by deep depopulation and Low population density. Farming has been declining, but there are several small-scale productions with recognized quality and potential to contribute to greater economic diversification and revitalization of the local economy. The objectives of the study were: (1) to analyze the "filieres" of a set of small-scale productions; (2) to assess the contribution of Local distribution and restaurants to support the promotion of Local products; (3) and to assess the tourists and visitors' interest and demand concerning these products.
