Bei einem Drittel der Patienten mit IBS-Durchfall (IBS-D) findet sich eine erhohte Gallensauresynthese oder -ausscheidung. Eine Studie zeigte positive Effekte auf die Darmfunktion des Ionenaustauschers Colesevelam. US-amerikanische Gastroenterologen verglichen die Auswirkungen von Colesevelam auf Symptome und Genexpressionsmuster in der Sigma-Dickdarmschleimhaut bei Gallensaure-Durchfall mit assoziiertem IBS-D mit Placebo.
