N-(4-Phenyl-2-thiazolyl)-2-propenamides IVa-h resulted in the reaction of N-(4-phenyl-2-thiazolyl)cyanoacetamide (II) with 4-substituted benzaldehydes. Compounds IVa-g were cyclized with malonodinitrile in the presence of piperidine to the corresponding polysubstituted 1-(4-phenyl-2-thiazolyl)-2-pyridones Va-g.
