Civil-military relations in Colombia: a workable relationship or a case for fundamental reform?

One of the least explored aspects of the current situation in Colombia is civil-military relations. Long an anomaly in Latin America, Colombia has virtually no history of military governments yet is a place of serious turmoil. This article argues that the lack of government legitimacy means that the armed forces have no real patria to defend and outside assistance is not going To change that. Instead civil-military tensions nod violence are likely to grow.
