Description of the mature larva of the wasp Dinetus pictus with phylogenetic implications for the tribe Dinetini (Insecta: Hymenoptera: Sphecidae)

The mature larva of the wasp Dinetus pictus is described. The ventral position of the anus, the absence of antennal papillae, and the weak development of the galeae, together with other minor differences in labrum, epipharynx, and parietal bands, clearly separate the larva of Dinetus from those of the tribe Astatini. Larval and adult characters do not support the inclusion of Dinetini in the Astatinae (sensu Bohart & Menke, 1976), and provide evidence in support of a relationship with the Larrinae-Crabroninae complex.
