While great progress has been made in the last 40 years the operational management of a multipurpose water reservoirs system still remains a very active research area. This paper quickly reviews the mean historical approaches to this issue and provides some thoughts on the still open problems and on their possible solutions. Copyright (C) 2001 IFAC.
