Examinations of the start-up behaviour of thrust-cones

Thrust-cones in helical gear-boxes compensate the axial forces induced by the tooth system near to its source. Thereby gear-boxes and radial bearings can be built lighter and with less friction losses. Due to its hydrodynamic working principle start-up and run-down-conditions may damage the machine element. To examine these conditions a calculation tool was programmed and a test-rig was built up at the Institute for Mechanical Engineering. In this paper the operating mode and first results of these two tools are presented.
