Phase decomposition and oxygen diffusion of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy single crystals annealed in various atmospheres

High quality Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy (Bi-2212) single crystals annealed at 750 degrees C for 1 h in air, vacuum, flowing oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres, have been studied by X-ray diffraction and AC susceptibility measurements. X-ray diffraction experiments showed that phases of BixSryCaz oxide and Bi2Sr2CuOx (Bi-2201) decompose from the annealed crystals and are found to be atmosphere dependent, The variations of the superconducting transition temperature T-c of crystals after annealing were also related to the atmosphere and could be explained by oxygen configuration. The relations among structural changes, oxygen diffusion and superconductivity of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy single crystal are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
