OWNERSHIP STRUCTURE AND SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY IN LISTED COMPANIES

This paper investigates the relationship between ownership structure variables and social and environmental responsibility in listed companies. The variables of ownership structure investigated were the stock concentration, managerial property, governmental property, international property and institutional property. Social and environmental responsibility was analyzed through an index of 91 indicators, based on the recommendations of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Regarding the ownership structure, we investigated the concentration of ownership, management property, governmental property, international property and institutional property. Descriptive, documentary and quantitative research was carried out in a sample of 34 listed companies. In relation to the indicators, which were divided into economic, environmental and social dimensions, the results showed that the highest average indicator was in the economic dimension, while the lowest was the social dimension. Regarding the ownership structure, it was verified that the average percentage of concentration of voting rights was 59.94%. As to the types of landowners, it was perceived that international property and government ownership stood out positively. Managerial ownership was the type of property with the lowest average percentage. Finally, there was a negative association between the shareholding concentration and social and environmental responsibility and positive association of government ownership and international ownership with social and environmental responsibility. The variables related to managerial and institutional property did not present statistical significance.
