We provide an account of mixing in stably stratified fluids: we present the basic concepts of mixing, recall how mixing is quantified and analyze mixing in the stably stratified shear layer along these lines. We also discuss the importance of mixing in the ocean and describe how it is modeled in this context, focusing upon the commonest approaches.
