Pneumatically driven flow valves are one of the most unreliable plant units usually exhibiting poor performance due to improper sizing or friction affects. Current 'smart' valve technology uses local proportional and integral (PI) control to improve the servo characteristics of the valve. In this contribution the use of simple, linear and non-linear model-based disturbance observers is examined for improving the local servo control of the valve.
