The L3 electromagnetic calorimeter consists of 10734 crystals of bismuth germanate (BGO). It is in use at LEP since 1989 and gives excellent energy and angular resolution over a wide energy range (photon and electron energy between 100 MeV and 100 GeV). After a brief description of its main characteristics, its performances, in term of noise, efficiency and stability are described. The different technics (calibration, monitoring, temperature measurements) used to reach these performances and keep them at this quality level are presented.
