Tumor cells maintain a reverse pH gradient relative to normal cells, conferring cell-intrinsic and cell-extrinsic benefits that sustain tumor growth. In this issue of Cancer Discovery, Galenkamp and colleagues reveal that NHE7 mediates acidification of the trans-Golgi network in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, which is critical for the maintenance of cytosolic pH and consequently tumor growth.
