摘要
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) mark a grand finale of stellar evolution. GRBs are among the most energetic events in the universe after the Big Bang. Significant progress has been made in the past few years in understanding the nature of the GRB progenitors through rapid imaging and spectroscopic followups. Here we provide a brief review of what we have learned about their properties from early-time light curve studies and afterglow spectroscopy. We also review the utility of GRB afterglows as cosmic probes to study the distant universe.
