Review of the skin barrier: role in atopic dermatitis and implications for therapy

This review examines the current knowledge of the physical, biochemical and immunologic barrier functions of the skin in light of evidence that impaired function contributes to the development of atopic disease. The clinical implications of an impaired skin barrier in dogs are presented and topical and systemic therapy that may assist in restoration of the skin barrier are discussed. Despite the evidence to support a relationship between changes in the skin barrier and atopic disease, it remains uncertain whether therapy to improve the skin barrier provides any appreciable benefit to dogs with atopic dermatitis.
