A few steps on the long road toward biomarkers in GVHD

In this issue of Blood, Schultz et al report the biomarker profiles of 241 patients 3 months after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT) who were followed for the development of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) or late acute GVHD. The patients were part of the prospective ABLE (Applied Biomarker of Late Effects of Childhood Cancer) trial, which was the first prospective multicenter biomarker trial stringently applying the National Institutes of Health (NIH) criteria for diagnosis of cGVHD in pediatric and adolescent patients.(1)
