摘要
Turkey remains a key producer of cotton but its production has been declining, particularly in the West and Southern regions. Turkey has hence become a major importer of cotton so as to meet the demand of its vibrant textile industry. The production decrease derives from the lack of profitability caused by high labour costs resulting from reduced migration of seasonal workers from the South-East of the country. This paper addresses the socio-economic issue of seasonal labour to implement cultivation and hand picking of cotton as well as the challenge ahead as the country moves towards mechanical harvesting.
