摘要：
A summary is presented of selected aspects of cur-rent understanding of the physics of active galactic nuclei and the problems they present for basic astrophysics. The topics discussed include the evidence for black holes in the centres of galaxies and active galaxies, jets and the role of active galactic nuclei in the origin and evolution of galaxies.
