PHENOMENOLOGY OF CORPORAL MEMORY

Despite the lack of consensus in contemporary cognitive psychology and neuroscience, the present article assumes that there is indeed - at least in descriptional terms-a corporal memory that encompasses the set of skills, dispositions and habits perceivable in unreflected activities such as playing an instrument, driving a vehicle, typing on a keyboard, etc. Supported especially by the notion of Operative Intentionality, as described by Maurice Merleau-Ponty in the Phenomenology of Perception (1945), we intend to demonstrate that besides the representational features of memory there is a type of memory which is only comprehensible as corporal and untranslatable into propositional terms.
