摘要
A new Location Management (LM) method is proposed in this paper for cost-reduction. By exploiting the increasing computing power and self-locating capability of the emerging Mobile Station (MS), MS' mobility model can be shared and synchronized with the wireless network to reduce the frequency of required communication for LM. Using the proposed method, MS does not need to repetitively register its location with the network as long as its movement is consistent with one of its mobility models. Based on the shared mobility model, the network can identify the MS' currently related cells for paging when it is required to mute a call to the MS. Only when the MS' movement does not fit any of its pre-defined mobility models, it needs to register its current Location Area. (LA) ID to the network for using the traditional static LA based LM method. The advantages provided by the proposed method include: (1) cost reduction of LM comparing with the traditional methods based on static location area, and (2) dynamic accommodation of various kinds of mobility models, including the widely used share-nothing model, via an algorithmic framework.
