SUSTAINABILITY OF BIOREACTOR LANDFILLS FOR DISPOSAL OF MUNICIPAL WASTE The construction of bioreactor landfills for the disposal of municipal waste is described in full detail. The possibility of using gas generated at such sites for the production of electricity and thermal energy is presented. Possible risks, costs and profits to be made during a five-year use are carefully considered, as an example of how every segment, and even the smallest detail, must be taken into account in the sphere of waste management. Although environmental benefits are significant, it is also important to make sure that the new landfill does not generate just the costs. Economic and financial hindrances are not the most important: such landfills are also burdened with complex maintenance and control of the entire system. This is why careful planning is extremely important, and the best possible use should be made of the European and world-wide experience in the design of anaerobic bioreactor landfills. An accurate calculation is proposed using a medium-sized landfill as an example.
