Interaction between valproic acid and meropenem:: Description of two pediatric cases

Concomitant administration of carbapenem antibiotics and valproic acid may produce a significant decrease in the plasmatic levels of this last one as a con, sequence of mechanism interaction that is not yet established We describe the. cases of two lactants treated with valproic acid, that after beginning therapy with meropenem suffered a decrease to infratherapeutic seric levels. Once the antimicrobial was substituted, we observed a progressive increase in concentration until reaching therapeutic range in one case, while in the other it was necessary to reintroduce meropenem due to a deterioration of the clinical situation, which produced a new reduction of valproic acid levels. Although this interaction has been reported before and is not the most relevant for this drugs, may be import for the pediatric population because the risk of convulsive crises in epileptic patients with servere infections.
