摘要
The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) operated between 2.4 microns and 240 microns. It was launched on 17 November 1995, and the observational phase ended on 8 April 1998, when the liquid helium coolant finally ran out. ISO has contributed new results to virtually every area of astronomy, and the data will continue to do so for many years. It is far too early to assess objectively the impact of this observatory, but several themes are developing already; namely molecules (in particular water, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ices), dust (silicates, extended structures), and star formation (galactic and extragalactic). The ISO data archive will be a treasure-trove for many years.
