Ventilation in the patient with unilateral lung disease

Severe unilateral lung disease and increase in the compliance of the involved lung result in asymmetric distribution and ventilation. Most cases can be effectively managed with conventional techniques; occasionally, patients require the use of modalities such as lateral positioning and independent lung ventilation. This article reviews the indications and applications of these techniques.
