Phases of variable composition in the Ca3(VO4)2-NdVO4-Na3VO4 system

Phase equilibria in the Ca-3(VO4)(2)-NdVO4-Na3VO4 system were studied. Phases of variable composition (PVCs) on the basis of calcium orthovanadate were found to be formed in the system. The PVC region lies in the Ca-3(VO4)(2)-Ca9Nd square (VO4)(7)-Ca10Na(VO4)(7)-Ca8NdNa2(VO4)(7) quadrangle (Z = 6). The boundary compositions are governed by the structure of the low-temperature phase of Ca-3(VO4)(2) (Z = 21, space group R3c). The occupancy factor for Ca(4) sites considerably affects the phase transition temperature, ionic conductivity, and IR and Raman spectra. A considerable increase in the calcium ion conductivity above 650 K is explained by order-disorder phase transition connected with the redistribution of structure vacancies (square) over various cationic sites.
