The article explores Derrotero y viaje a Espana y las Indias (1567) written by Ulrich Schmidl, with the objective of reconstructing the ways in which the indigenous otherness was produced through ethnographic devices. The article also revises the narrative structure of the text, and its rhetoric and ideological strategies, as indispensable tools for the discursive foundation for the territorial newness of the Southern Cone (Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil).
