The paper covers new requirements on quality of service in new multimedia services over IP networks with the mixture of transmission technologies. It is presented how the transmission, switching, storage, and management of the infrastructure should be changed to fulfill those requirements. It is shown that the only possible solution is to build all-optical transmission systems.
