Large eddy simulation of turbulent transfer in MHD duct flows with strong sidewall jets

Large-eddy simulation (LES) of the turbulent duct flows in a liquid metal magnethydrodynamic (MHD) power generator is examined to reveal the turbulent transfer in the MHD flows with strong sidewall jets. The non-uniform magnetic flux density in the streamwise direction produces two eddy electric currents. The eddy current causes the wall jet flows with M-shaped mean streamwise velocity profiles in the plane perpendicular to the external magnetic field. A laminar-turbulent transition occurs in the strong sidewall jets because the sidewall jets enhance with magnetic flux density. In the strong sidewall jets, the mean Reynolds shear stress profile reverses and the turbulent intensity profiles have two maxima like conventional wall jets without magnetic field.
