In recent years the use of somatostatin (SST) or its analogue octreotide (OCT) has been described for the treatment of refractory chylothorax in neonates. Indication, dose and length of treatment are not precisely defined as yet. To date only few cases of OCT or SST use in preterm infants with a gestational age < 32 weeks have been published. Treatment was successful in these patients without serious adverse effects. We report two preterm (gestational age 27 and 25 weeks) infants with chylothorax following surgical ligation of a patent arterial duct. Both patients were treated successfully with OCT (96 A mu g/kg per day).
