摘要
Istanbul; with its history of housing Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Turkish cultures, possesses and reflects multi cultural quality in its urban fabric. This paper will focus on neighbourhoods of Istanbul which possess monuments of Byzantine, Ottoman period and characteristic urban fabric of Istanbul in history. While these monuments are frequently visited areas of the city, their urban fabric is often neglected. This paper aims to integrate these monuments with their surrounding urban fabric as promenades, reflecting the culture they once possessed and as places of the city rich with spatial characteristics, an excerpt from the past in making today's cities livable. Promenade of Kariye-Ayvansaray, promenade of Eminonu-Nuruosmaniye Mosque are selected for this study. On site observations and analysis of the spatial fabric in sequence, analysis of social and physical development of these neigbourhoods in history are the methods used for this research.
