Surgical treatment of brachycephalic syndrome

Palatoplasty and rhinoplasty are the two preferred surgical techniques for the treatment of brachycephalic syndrome. If the operation on the soft palate or the nostrils do not provide notable or durable improvement, then it is necessary to operate on the larynx. The appropriate surgical procedure to choose is decided after a precise assessment of the stage of laryngeal collapse using laryngoscope examination. Unilateral arytenoidal lateralisation is the option of choice (by default) for stage I and 11 laryngeal collapse but definitive tracheostomy may be necessary for stage III. The successful treatment of this syndrome includes early diagnosis and treatment (ideally before six-months of age) and management of concomitant digestive conditions.
