摘要
A calculational and experimental study was undertaken to determine whether a liquid metal could be used as a heat source for the pyrolysis of methane to form carbon and hydrogen. The thermodynamics and energetics for production of hydrogen by methane pyrolysis, followed by the generation of electricity in a fuel cell, were determined to be favourable. The financial penalty from the sequestration of carbon is only about $100 per tonne of carbon produced. Substitution of this process for combustion of natural gas by a turbine would contribute in a major way to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
