摘要
At no more an opportuned time than now (in the national life of Nigeria and its education system) has it become very pertinent to address, in practical terms, three of its main perennial educational problems - teacher production, utilizational and turnover - particularly at the secondary school level. In particular, inadequate, qualitative and quantitative production of teachers, over utilization and under utilization of teachers resulting from poor teacher distribution by subjects, school geographical locations and ownership, and high teacher turnover or attrition rate have been expounded. The paper has shown distributions of secondary school teachers by gender, ownership and location with more teachers who are concentrated in the cities being under utilized and less teachers in rural areas being over utilized Furthermore, it-hits been explained that the rate at which teachers leave the teaching profession is increasing annually, as a result of poor conditions of service, poor public image, poor pay and remunetation. Ways of addressing these anormalies have been suggested so as to lift our education up from imminent total collapse.
