摘要
Additions of carbon in the range of 0.1 to 1 wt% to iron aluminides allow machining without surface cracking. The improvement in machinability does not depend on amount or type of second phase present, but is related to a reduced susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement on account of blocking of interstitial sites by carbon in these alloys. Despite these improvements, the alloys still exhibit hydrogen embrittlement during subsequent tensile tests.
