Balloon angioplasty is the most commonly used endovascular technique in the nonoperative treatment of lower-extremity arterial disease. Along with endoluminal stenting, these alternatives to surgical therapy can be highly effective in appropriately selected patients. Their use, both independent of and in conjunction with surgery, is discussed in this article. The role of atherectomy, although rather limited, is also discussed.
