PSOE AND THE NATO'S REFERENDUM, 1982-1986

The integration of Spain into NATO is one of the most controversial episodes in its recent democratic history. Through the following pages, a brief study will be shown about the period between the arrival of the Spanish Workers Socialist Party to the government in October 1982, and the referendum for the permanence of Spain in the Atlantic Alliance in 1986. The center of the study is PSOE and the evolution of the party regarding its position in foreign and security policy. The first part of the process was influenced by the joining of Spain to the European Economic Community. The second part of the study reflects some of the internal atmosphere of great tension in PSOE regarding NATO until the socialist referendum celebration.
