摘要：
The need for, and the availability of, data for comparative, multi-population research have greatly increased over recent years. The chapter discusses some complex but important issues relating to the meaning, generation and use of comparable data, with special reference to social survey data in the European Union. Major international programmes are described and classified in terms of the degree of comparability achieved. Also considered is a most pertinent issue of concern to users, namely, access to microdata for comparative research.
