A Microfluidic Prototype for Scaling-up Microbial Fuel Cell Systems

摘要
In this work, a conceptual idea of a stackable and scalable microbial fuel cell (MFC) design was validated by using a miniaturized microfluidic system. Eight micro-MFC units were installed along with a common feed microfluidic channel between which the two individual units shared the common organic substrates. This concept avoids the requirement of a complicated liquid distribution system to deliver organic substrate individually to different MFC units, thereby providing a novel approach for easy construction, maintenance, operation and implementation of the MFC stack. This microfluidic experimental device will (i) replace the bulky, expensive, cumbersome-to-operate macro-scale prototypes and (ii) determine critical design parameters/operational conditions for scaling-up MFC systems as a future alternative "green" energy technology and energy-efficient wastewater treatment method.
