Computation of structure-borne noise propagation in ship structures using noise-FEM

The Noise Finite Element Method (Noise-FEM) allows the computation of structure-borne sound intensity flux through complex ship structures. In case finite-element models for global strength and vibration calculations are available, they can be further used for Noise-FEM analyses. The method can be employed to optimize local structural elements along the main structure-borne sound transmission paths, thereby increasing the structure-borne sound insulation index in the frequency ranges of interest. Applied Noise-FEM results are shown and discussed. By comparing computed and measured structure-borne sound levels, the accuracy is plotted against the octave mid-band frequency, ranging from 31.5 Hz to 8,000 Hz.
