Synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of a novel mixed-valent strontium rhodium oxide

摘要
Sr6Rh5O15, a new n = 1 member of the A(3n+1)A'Bn+3O9+6n family of hexagonal perovskites, has been synthesized. In the structure, RhO6 octahedra form face-sharing linear tetramers, which are linked by RhO6 trigonal prisms to form infinite [RhO3](infinity) chains. Magnetic measurements show that each tetramer contains only one unpaired electron due to rhodium-rhodium interactions. At low temperatures, the systems order antiferromagnetically with an anomolously large drop in susceptibility.
