Synthesis and antimicrobial activities of some new benzodiazepines and benzothiazepines

The Claisen-Schmidt condensation of p-methoxy acetophenone I with aromatic aldehydes in ethanol in presence of strong alkali gave 1-(4-methoxy phenyl)-3-phenyl prop-en-1 ones (2a-d). Reactions of (2a-d) with orthophenylinediamine and orthoaminothiophenol in abs alcohol gave 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-phenyl-2,3 dihydro-1H-1,5 benzodiazepines (3a-d) and 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-phenyl-2,3 dihydro-1H-1.5 benzothiazepines (4a-d). All newly synthesized compounds were characterized by using IR, (1)H NMR and mass spectral studies and these compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activities.
