Performance Analysis of ECC and RSA for Securing CoAP-Based Remote Health Monitoring System

Internet of Things has become a vital component in diverse applications essentially smart cities, automated transportation, environmental monitoring, and many more. With the increased dependency on IoT and its association with the current Internet, efficiency and security have become essentials to guarantee the correct behavior of IoT devices or nodes in the network. This paper focuses on enhancing the security of data, gathered from remote health monitoring of patients using CoAP. The security in such sensor network can be ensured using asymmetric cryptography techniques. The public key algorithms such as ECC and RSA have been implemented for ensuring confidentiality, integrity in sensor network, and authorization between patient nodes and client. The work also compares these algorithms on parameters such as time consumption in generating keys along with signature generation and verification of ECC and RSA algorithms, energy consumption, and other factors such as average power consumption, radio duty cycle, to check their compatibility in constrained environments.
