A new apparatus for measuring the viscosity of plastics of 10(8)-10(14) Pa center dot s from room temperature to 100 degrees C was developed. This is considered to be an absolute measurement method that requires no calibration. For the measurement of specimen deformation, dielectric capacitance detectors were used. By using the apparatus, the primary viscosities characterizing the short-time deformations with single relaxation times of five plastics and lead were determined. This apparatus is expected to usher in a new academic and industrial field of the rheology of solid plastics.
