A novel approach to lambda(5)-phosphinines has been discovered. Phosphonium salts bearing an alkyl group and the residue of beta-dialkylaminocrotonic acid react with DMADMF affording lambda(5)-phosphinines. A plausible mechanism of the reaction is offered.
