Dynamic investigations and strengthening on masonry bell tower

In areas of high seismic activity, such as Corfu (0.24 g) earthquakes constitute the main cause of damages or collapse of monuments and historical buildings. This paper describes research carried out, as proposal to save a historical campanile in Corfu which now lies in ruins. An analytical model with 3D shell and frame elements (Finite Elements Method) was developed for research into the structural behaviour, deformation and stress distribution of the tower under static and dynamic loading. The piers of campanile were checked by Eurocode-6. Proposals are developed to improve the behaviour of the structural system.
