Cross-Language Information Retrieval in Web application

A growing area of research in the information retrieval (IR) field concerns cross-language information retrieval. Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) consists of providing a query in one language and searching document collections in one or more different languages. Recently, Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) has been widely studied, but they are not often applied to and evaluated for Web applications. In this paper, the research on developing a Translingual German-English-Chinese Web portal in the business domain will be expatiated on. An approach, which combines machine translation methods with dictionary base terminology, has been adopted. In the terminology module, phrasal translation, query expansion and human interaction have been used to improve the performance. To handle information written in Chinese and German correctly and simultaneously, the Char sets and Encoding methods have been discussed in detail.
