Array mutual coupling calibration with measured element patterns

Since array mutual coupling degrades the performance of array pattern synthesis techniques, the paper presents a new calibration approach for alleviating the problem. It consists of two steps: calculation of mutual coupling coefficients based on measured element patterns, and compensation for the errors with a matrix multiplication performed on the array output. Compared with other methods, the advantages of this approach are that it is suitable for planar arrays with arbitrary geometries and can be readily implemented in an actual system. Computer simulation results demonstrate that the new method is correct and effective.
