摘要
The need for continuity diaphragms in continuous prestressed concrete bridge girders is investigated. The bridge parameters that are considered in this study are based on design of experiment techniques and the results of a survey sent to all states bridge engineers. The parameters include skew angle, length of the span, beam spacing, and the aspect ratio. The effects of diaphragms on stresses and deflections from truck and lane loading on continuous skewed bridges are evaluated. The results of this research provide a fundamental understanding of the load transfer mechanism in diaphragms of skewed bridges. The effectiveness of continuity diaphragms at skew angles larger than 30degrees in continuous bridges with AASHTO Type II girders is limited. The outcome of this research will reduce the construction and maintenance cost of bridges to the nation.
