Exploring the research-based ranking and the university impact in Greece : A case of peripheral departments of management and economics

This paper presents a methodology to explore the research-based ranking and the university impact in Greece, via the case study of research-based rankings of peripheral management and economics University departments. The Scopus database was used in order to gather metrics concerning the academic research quality and quantity of each department's faculty members. These metrics include the number and the quality of articles and books published and the number of citations that articles received. In addition, we study how the department's research performance along with economic factors (e.g. population of the city that a department belongs to) affect its impact (e.g. popularity, demand) in relation to the the minimum admission base of prospective students to enroll in undergraduate studies, according to their performance in Greek national exams. Since there exist several departments with low admission grade but high research performance, we provide a model that calculates a more fair representative base, equivalently taking into account department research performance and economic factors.
