Energy efficiency has always been a key factor in wireless sensor networks. So far, many energy-efficient routing protocols have been proposed and much attention has been attracted to cluster-based routing protocols. However, some of these protocols need location information of the sensor nodes in the network. A new energy efficient, self-organized and hierarchical routing approach by combining cluster-based routing protocol with Directed Diffusion protocols is proposed in this paper. By this scheme, sensor nodes are self-organized into clusters, and directed diffusion is used in Inter-cluster. This approach makes the energy consumption and the lifetime of the whole network more balanced and longer. The result of simulation shows that this approach is energy efficient and makes the lifetime of the network longer.
